The airmen of Air Force Special Operations Command have had a positive and significant impact on Santa Rosa County and on the communities of Navarre, Midway, Holley, and East Milton. They are - and have been for many years - our neighbors. We see them in the grocery store. We worship next to them in our churches. They have been the heavily deployed to hostile locations all over the world and we take care of their families while they are gone. They shed their blood and at times pay the ultimate sacrifice in both combat operations when they are away and in training accidents when they are at home. Its time our county acknowledged their service to our community in a big (and overdue) way. For this reason we wish to see the bridge over Santa Rosa Sound to Navarre Beach be named the Air Commando Bridge.
MSgt John Chapman was the first member of the Air Force to be awarded the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. MSgt Chapman was a Combat Controller serving as part of what is now the 24th Special Operations Wing, the only wing in the Air Force solely dedicated to conducting Special Tactics air warfare with our nation's other Special Forces units in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps.
